Willem Hendrik Gispen

Willem Hendrik Gispen

1890-1981

In 1916 Willen Hendrik Gispen bought a small ornamental forge on the Coolsingel and calls this factory Gispen & Co. In this early period, Gispen manufactured shutters, bronze fronts and ironwork. Later he also starts to manufacture smaller products such as the Giso lamps, which are produced in series.

Gispen and tubular frame

The production of tubular steel furniture started in 1928. Best-known designs are the armchair 412 and chair 101/201. Gispen leaves the company in 1949 and starts Kembo in 1953. He is also a freelance designer working for Emmeinstaal and Riemersma.
