Coen de Vries

Coen de Vries (1918–2018) was a Dutch designer who had a strong influence on Dutch interior and furniture design. He aimed to create well-designed, affordable and practical furniture.

In 1947 he founded ‘De Sleutel’. The store grew into a respected interior design studio where his own designs, as well as works by others such as Gerrit Rietveld, were sold. De Vries was also an active member of the Goed Wonen Foundation. Established in 1946, this foundation aimed to improve housing culture for all layers of society.

Between 1952 and 1961, De Vries designed several model homes for Goed Wonen. He introduced smart solutions for smaller spaces by offering multifunctional and extendable furniture. Coen de Vries also designed for well-known Dutch brands such as Bruynzeel, Lips, Gispen and Mepal.
