Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was a successful Danish architect and designer. In addition to designing buildings, including the Royal hotel in Copenhagen, he also designed taps, cutlery and furniture. Functionalistic design and 'form follows function' were central to Jacobsen's designs. He was influenced by Mies van der Rohe, Le Cobusier, Charles Eames and the Bauhaus. Jacobsen, in turn, has influenced many other designers.

The butterfly chair was one of the most commercial successes and definitively established the names of Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen. The chair has a timeless design and a high seating comfort. It is therefore not surprising that the chair is still in production at Fritz Hansen.
